Can You Get Pregnant After An Ectopic Pregnancy?

ectopic pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilised egg implants outside the uterus, typically in the fallopian tubes.

It is considered to be a high-risk situation, which primarily happens because the fertilised egg can’t move down the fallopian tube into the uterus. Caused by the blockage or damage of the fallopian tubes because of the infection or inflammation. Other contributors include pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), abdominal surgery, or certain contraceptive methods.

Detecting an Ectopic Pregnancy Early Avoids Complications

The first sign of an ectopic pregnancy is often abdominal pain, which may range from mild discomfort to severe cramping. The pain may be localised on one side of the abdomen and progress. Other signs include vaginal bleeding (which is categorised as lighter or heavier bleeding than usual in a normal menstrual period) accompanied by pelvic pain.

In severe cases, i.e., as a result of a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, shoulder pain occurs. In such a situation, the individual has to seek immediate medical attention. Pain or discomfort during urination or bowel movements is a serious concern too.

When an ectopic pregnancy is left untreated, it can even lead to life-threatening conditions. These include rupture of the fallopian tube, heavy internal bleeding, shock, and even death.

Early detection and timely intervention are important to prevent these severe consequences and manage the risks.

Can it be treated without surgery?

In some cases, with early detection, ectopic pregnancy can be cured with non-surgical interventions by prescribing a medication that will stop the growth of the embryo.

However, surgery is often necessary, especially if there is a risk of rupture. Usually done laparoscopically, it may repair or remove the affected fallopian tube.
