In a critical emergency case, Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals successfully stabilized a 55-year-old male patient suffering from respiratory distress, rising kidney dysfunction, and suspected gastrointestinal obstruction, all layered atop a background of chronic diabetes and hypertension.

The patient, previously receiving conservative care at another tertiary center, was referred with worsening leg swelling and breathlessness. On arrival, his creatinine had surged to 2.98, and he presented in a decompensated state: tachypneic (RR 30/min), pale, and dependent on oxygen support. His blood glucose was elevated at 266 mg/dL.

He was immediately placed on BIPAP ventilation and administered broad-spectrum antibiotics, fluid support, and continuous monitoring in the ICU.

Key medical interventions included:

  • Management for acute kidney injury and suspected pyelonephritis
  • Treatment of community-acquired pneumonia and sepsis
  • Conservative management of subacute small bowel obstruction
  • Multispecialty coordination: Nephrology, Pulmonology, Surgery, and Critical Care

“This was a complex, multi-organ challenge,” said Dr. Prabhu Kanchi, Senior Consultant Nephrologist at Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals and added that “Rapid stabilization and seamless coordination across specialties were key to preventing further deterioration.”

The family was counselled about high-risk interventions, prognosis, and insurance policy limitations (including CGHS non-coverage for surgical options). The patient remains stable and has chosen to continue care for 48 hours before planned discharge.

This case exemplifies the hospital’s readiness to manage high-risk patients through protocol-driven, multidisciplinary care round-the-clock.
