Chennai, August 2025. In a remarkable medical breakthrough, Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals, Chennai’s leading multi-speciality hospital, has successfully performed India’s first thoracoscopic (keyhole) removal of a giant thymolipoma in a child.

The child was diagnosed with a huge mediastinal tumour that encased major blood vessels and pressed against the heart and lungs. Globally, such rare Pediatric cases are managed through open chest surgery (clamshell thoracotomy), a highly morbid and risky procedure in children.

Instead, Dr. Raghul, Pediatric Surgeon at Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals, performed a minimally invasive thoracoscopic surgery (laparoscopy through the chest). Using just three small ports, the surgical team carefully dissected the tumour despite dense adhesions to the pericardium, hilum of the lung, and proximity to both phrenic nerves.

The entire tumour was removed safely while preserving vital structures. The child made a flawless recovery, was discharged without complications, and remains healthy with no recurrence at one-year follow-up.

This milestone marks a first-of-its-kind achievement in India, reaffirming Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals as a center of excellence for Pediatric surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and complex tumour management in children.
