Food Poisoning During Monsoon Season | Remedies & Prevention

The monsoon season brings not only relief from the scorching heat but also creates an ideal breeding ground for infectious pathogens like bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

The warmth and moisture are the reasons for the proliferation of these microorganisms, which are responsible for contaminating food and beverages. Subsequently, this leads to food-borne infections like food poisoning.

How to Prevent Food-Borne Infections:

Most likely, during the monsoon season, we tend to satiate our taste buds, especially craving spicy and fried foods. This is because of the lack of sunlight, which decreases the production of vitamin D. That makes our bodies crave carbs and, as a result, boosts the happy hormone (serotonin).

Craving aside, keeping the gut healthy is much important for healthy living. Nurture mindfulness in your food choices! Some of the effective tips are given as follows:

  • Eat fresh food, preferably home-cooked foods.
  • Avoid consuming roadside foods, including chaat items and samosas.
  • Avoid spicy, oily, and fried foods.
  • Do not opt for packed foods and canned juices.
  • Omit raw foods and pre-cut fruits.
  • Instead of dairy products, including milk sweets and unpasteurised milk, go with fresh dairy products and pasteurised milk.
  • When eating meat, ensure it is cooked well. If you’re a seafood lover, try to consume it in moderation or avoid it if possible.
  • Drink adequate water (preferably boiled water). Make sure not to overhydrate yourself, as it may impact kidney function.
  • Consider including organic ingredients like ginger and lemon in your diet.
  • Can opt for buttermilk and lighter foods.

Home Remedies to Relieve From Food Poisoning:

Proper rest and staying hydrated are the best remedies for food poisoning.

  • Drink water and get enough sleep.
  • Consume coconut water and lemonade.
  • Ensure a milk-free diet.
  • Avoid heavy meals.
  • Include bananas, diluted fresh juices, potatoes, and boiled vegetables in your diet.
  • When feeling dehydrated, it is better to consume an oral rehydration solution (ORS) in the range of 200 ml to 250 ml.

When To Consult A Doctor?

While many cases of food poisoning can be managed at home with rest and hydration, it is vital to be vigilant and aware of when medical attention is necessary.

The following are the warning signs you should be aware of and for which you have to consult a doctor immediately:

  • Excessive vomiting and diarrhoea with signs of severe dehydration including intense thirst, dark urine, dizziness, and a rapid heartbeat.
  • When a mild fever turns into a high temperature (exceeds 101.5°F or 38.6°C) or persistent fever (beyond a couple of days).
  • The presence of blood in stools.
  • Individuals with weakened immune systems, chronic illnesses, or pregnant women, even with mild symptoms.
  • Extreme caution should be given to the elderly and young children.

Timely consultation with a doctor can prevent complications, especially in the cases mentioned above. Meet Dr. Mehta’s medical experts and address your concerns immediately.

Take care of your gut health!

The specialist team from The Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Gastrointestinal Oncology and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Dr Mehta’s Hospitals, a 200 bedded Multi-Specialty Tertiary Care Unit at Velappanchavadi, Chennai, successfully removed cancer in hypopharynx and upper esophagus through complete minimally invasive surgery. The surgery was performed in an effort to save the life of a 56-year-old gentleman from Sivaganga District, Tamil Nadu.

The highly committed medical team at Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals, comprising of Laparoscopic Cancer Surgeon & Surgical Gastroenterologist Dr Bala Murugan S., Anesthetist Dr Raj Kumar & Dr Thirumurugan and Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons swung into action for evaluation. The team performed Tamil Nadu’s 1st complete Laparoscopic procedure to remove the throat cancer.

Speaking on the Laparoscopic Surgery, Dr Bala Murugan highlighted “The 56yrs old gentleman presented with complaints of difficulty in swallowing which was painful. Endoscopy revealed a growth in hypopharynx (throat) and upper esophagus (food pipe) which was biopsied and proved to be cancer. MRI neck, chest and abdomen confirmed the presence of cancerous growth spreading to larynx (voice box). As any delay in treatment would increase the cancer spread and also patient wanted immediate surgery, we promptly decided to go with surgical intervention. The proposed surgery was COMPLETELY THORACO LAPAROSCOPIC LARYNGO PHARYNGO ESOPHAGECTOMY WITH ENDOSTAPLED GASTRIC PULL UP. The surgery involved removing the pharynx (throat), larynx (voice box) and esophagus (food pipe) and a part of the stomach as enbloc removal of cancer.

In order to make patient eat normally through mouth, the stomach is brought to the floor of mouth and joined with it. This surgery was done in complete minimally invasive technique without laparotomy (abdomen opening) or thoracotomy (thorax opening) for the first time in Tamil Nadu by Dr Bala Murugan. The patient was in intensive care for immediate post-operative days and was discharged without any pain, complications and scars in abdomen.
