~ Actress Namitha and Director & Actor Ramesh Khanna flagged off the Walkathon ~
Chennai, March 14th, 2021: Mehta Multispecialty Hospitals India Pvt Ltd and International Paediatric Nephrology Association (IPNA) organised a 2kms long walkathon which was kick-started at Elliot’s beach, Besant Nagar, Chennai to create awareness on “Living Well with Kidney Diseases to mark 16th Edition of World Kidney Day. The walkathon organized by the Department of Paediatric Nephrology at Dr Mehta’s Hospitals, under the leadership of Dr. Kalaivani Ganesan along with her colleagues Dr Sudha Ekambaram and Dr Sukanya Govindan with the guidance of Dr. B. R. Nammalwar (Director-Paediatric Nephrology) Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals, Chennai. The Walkathon was flagged off by Actress Namitha and Director & Actor Ramesh Khanna.
Over 200 students and their parents participated in the walkathon and the students carried placards and banners to spread awareness on precautions and management of chronic kidney ailments and importance of prevention of kidney ailments. This year’s World Kidney Day is being observed with the theme ‘Living Well with Kidney Disease”.
Speaking on the occasion Dr. Kalaivani Ganesan highlighted “The objective of organising this event is to increase education and awareness about effective symptom management and patient empowerment, with the ultimate goal of encouraging meaningful participation in every-day life.”
On the occasion Dr Sudha Ekambaram added “Effective measures to prevent kidney disease and its progression is important, patients with kidney disease – including those who depend on dialysis and transplantation – and their care-partners should also feel supported, especially during pandemics and other challenging periods, by the concerted efforts of kidney care communities
Specifically, WKD calls on everyone to advocate for concrete preventive measures in every country to improve kidney care by encouraging them to adopt healthy lifestyles (access to clean water, exercise, healthy diet, tobacco control. Many types of kidney diseases can be prevented, delayed and/or kept under control when appropriate prevention measures are in place. Sensitizing every individual of the world population on these preventive measures is one of the goals of physicians who care for patients with kidney diseases. The International Society of Nephrology/International paediatric nephrology and other Forums of Nephrologists world over unite together on this day for the sacred mission.
