COVID 19 IN PREGNANCY – FACTS TO KNOW

While the world is facing the difficult times, the overwhelming joy of Pregnancy should not be dimmed given the ongoing COVID 19 Pandemic situation. Its important to know that Expectant Mothers have right to Safe and Positive Pregnancy and Birthing experience ,despite the ongoing Pandemic. Its essential to ward off the Prevailing Myths and to know the facts. The Principles of Preventing COVID 19  infection in pregnancy revolves around Disinfection,Respiratory Hygiene,Hand washing, Social Distancing, Working from Home, Avoiding Cultural and Social gatherings, Uninterrupted indulgence in Immune boosting foods rich in Vitamins and Antioxidants. Expectant mothers must get in touch with their Obstetricians for planned Prenatal visits. Expectant mothers who have associated health conditions like Diabetes , Hypertension, Cardiac or respiratory problems are more prone to develop severe form of Infection, Hence strict control of these conditions are mandated during Pregnancy.

It’s also learned that there is No transmission noted through placenta, genital tract or breast milk. The Spectrum of Symptoms, Recommendations during Quarantine and Isolation and Testing Methods are same in expectant mothers as for any adult population. Studies have so far noted that there are no increased chances for specific ill effects like abortion, growth issues in fetus , Preterm labor, Developmental Problems in fetus etc.. When expectant mother tests Positive for infection, Triaging is based on Symptoms and Obstetric conditions and Multidisciplinary approach is ensured in the Management. Birthing route will be deemed by the Clinical condition of Mother and the In Utero fetal condition. Mothers may opt to breast feed the child provided hygiene practices are strictly adhered to and woman is well or the mother can express breast milk under strict hygienic conditions and baby can be fed by another well person. Breast feeding mothers are also advised to get themselves vaccinated and is known to be safe doing so.
